Highlights of the neighbourhood
There is a lot to see in Lisbon and most of the sights are within walking distance of The Lisbonaire, in Baixa, Chiado and the Castle hill.
The area has numerous museums, churches, monuments and belvederes worth visiting. We suggest visiting the archaeological museum in the ruins of Convento do Carmo, that was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, the archeological site in Rua dos Correeiros, with the remains of roman occupation, the fashion and design museum MUDE, contemporary art Museu do Chiado, the water museum under the Principe Real garden which is an entrance to a vast network of underground pathways or the Botanical Garden, adjacent to the Natural History Museum, where you can relax and take a long walk under the tree shade. This area has also a rich religious patrimony, such as Lisbon's Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in the city, or S. Domingos church, from the XIII century where you can still see the signs of the big 1959 fire. From the Castle, you have an unparalleled view over Lisbon, city known for its many perspectives. Graça, S. Pedro de Alcântara and Sta. Catarina belvederes are also fantastic vantage points to see the city. To overcome the steep hills of Lisbon we suggest taking one of the secular elevators such as Glória, just a few meters from The Lisbonaire, or Sta. Justa, Lavra or Bica, that offer comfort in an old fashioned style. But surely the best way to get to know Lisbon is to get lost in Baixa and Chiado, or in the ancient Moorish neighborhood of Alfama and the Castle, and discover the people and the heritage, the traditions, sights, sounds and aromas of the city.
